  • What is the difference between solid gold, vermeil, and gold plated?
We work exclusively with solid gold. Understanding the differences between these types of gold jewelry comes down to the amount of actual gold used and how it's applied. Here's a breakdown: Solid Gold: This means the entire piece of jewelry is made of gold alloy. The purity of the gold is indicated by its karatage (e.g., 24K, 18K, 14K). 24K is pure gold, which is very soft, so it's usually alloyed with other metals like silver, copper, or zinc to increase its durability. For example, 18K gold is 75% pure gold and 25% other metals.Solid gold is the most expensive option due to the amount of gold used. It is also the most tarnish-resistant and long-lasting. Gold Vermeil: Gold vermeil features a base of sterling silver (.925 silver) that is thickly plated with gold. The gold plating must be at least 10 karats and at least 2.5 microns thick. This offers a good balance of quality and affordability. The sterling silver base provides a precious metal foundation, and the thick layer of gold gives it a luxurious look and better durability than gold-plated jewelry. Gold Plated: Gold-plated jewelry has a base metal (often brass, copper, or nickel) that is coated with a very thin layer of gold through a process called electroplating. The thickness of the gold layer is significantly less than that of gold vermeil, typically ranging from 0.05 to 0.25 microns. Because the gold layer is so thin, it can wear off relatively quickly with regular use, exposing the base metal underneath. Gold-plated jewelry is the most affordable option but has the shortest lifespan.
